WCA REITERATES CALL FOR PAUL BIYA TO HONOUR PLEDGE FOR FRANK TALKS
The West Cameroon Association (WCA) is a collective of English speaking Cameroonians living in Cameroon and the Diaspora.
We have taken note of random press and social media reports of some West Cameroonians negotiating behind closed doors with representatives or appointees of the Government of the Republic of Cameroon. We do not know the contents of those negotiations.
The WCA warns that whatever the contents may be, those negotiations must not mislead the participants to form the impression that the talks are directly or indirectly aimed at, or have as an objective, to seek to resolve the now well known “Anglophone Problem”.
Accordingly, WCA views those talks with deep reservations and suspicion. Therefore, unless and until the agenda and modus operandi of the talks follows well documented international standards, and includes all stakeholders in the composition and selection of a mediator and the parties, any agreements reached will not command the support of the people of West Cameroon.
WCA repeats its demands:
That President Paul Biya delivers on his pledge in his end of year address to the nation, to instruct members of Government “ to engage in frank dialogue with the various parties concerned to find appropriate solutions to the issues raised”.
That the Government of Cameroon establishes an independent commission of inquiry with full powers to summon and interview witnesses to investigate the beatings, arbitrary arrests, detentions and torture, and in some cases firing live ammunitions and killing unarmed civilians for expressing their rights to peaceful protests. Such a commission should be chaired by a reputable individual or individuals selected in consultation with all stakeholders.
